Hot tub not heating or heating slowly: causes and solutions

Find the cause step by step when a hot tub is not heating or heating slowly: wood-fired heater, electric element, heat pump and heat loss. With checklist.

Short answer: work through the causes in a fixed order. First rule out basic heat loss: is the cover on, is the tub sheltered from wind, is the water level correct? Then look at the heating itself: for wood, the quality of the wood, how full the heater is and the draught; for electric, the power supply, flow and safety cut-out; for a heat pump, airflow, filter and outdoor temperature. As a guideline: wood-fired 2 to 3.5 hours, 6 kW or heat pump 5 to 6 hours, 3 kW 10 to 14 hours. If it takes much longer, the cause is described below.

Step 1: rule out heat loss

Before doubting the technology:

  • Cover: is it on during heating, lying flat and sealing properly? A waterlogged cover barely insulates; see insulated cover.
  • Wind: a tub in full wind can lose up to double the heat. A windbreak or sheltered spot makes a difference every time you fire up.
  • Starting temperature: winter water at 5°C needs an extra half hour to an hour.
  • Volume: a Q-tub XXL with 1400 litres takes longer than a Mini with 700; see hot tub heating time for the calculation method.

Wood-fired heater: heater burns, water stays cold

Water level above the top connection (external) or at least 5 cm above the heater rim (internal); too low means no circulation and risk of damage

Electric element: switches off or does not heat

  1. Power: is the circuit switched on, has the residual current device not tripped?
  2. Water level and flow: an element that does not get enough water flowing past it switches itself off via the overheating protection. Check the level and filter, let the pump circulate first.
  3. Reset the thermal protection according to the manual, only after removing the cause.
  4. Error code on the display? Note it exactly; see error codes on the display.
  5. Scale: a scaled-up element gives off less heat. Measure the hardness and keep the pH at 7.2 to 7.6; see setting the water balance.
  6. If the fault keeps returning: switch off the power and have service check the element and flow switch.

A 3 kW element is intended to maintain temperature, not to heat up quickly; see using electric heating and a heat pump.

Heat pump: not reaching the temperature

  • Airflow: the unit needs free airflow all around; not enclosed, grille clear of leaves and snow.
  • Flow: a dirty filter or a valve in the wrong position restricts water flow; clean the filter and check the valve position.
  • Outdoor temperature: efficiency drops in frost and the unit defrosts regularly; that is normal, expect a longer heating time and keep the cover closed.
  • Setpoint: is the desired temperature set high enough?
  • Error message on the unit: note it and consult the manual; if the message persists, call service.

When to call service

  • An electric heater that trips again after a reset while level and flow are correct.
  • An error code that returns after a reset.
  • A wood-fired heater that fails to heat the water despite dry wood, a full heater and good draught: possibly a blocked connection.
  • Water leaking at the heater or connections.

Frequently asked questions

How long should heating up take?
Wood-fired takes around 2 to 3.5 hours depending on the model, a 6 kW element or a heat pump around 5 to 6 hours, and a 3 kW element 10 to 14 hours. If it takes much longer, something is wrong with the fire, cover, flow or technology.
Why does my electric heater switch off immediately?
Usually because of a low water level or insufficient flow, triggering the overheating protection. Check the level and filter, let the pump circulate first, then reset the protection.
Why does my hot tub cool down so quickly?
In nine out of ten cases it is due to a missing, poorly fitting or waterlogged cover, or an exposed location in full wind. The water surface is by far the biggest source of heat loss.
My wood-fired heater is burning well but the water stays cold, why?
With an external heater, a connection may be above water level, or there is air in the pipe, so the water is not circulating. For both types: wet wood, a half-full heater or poor draught. Check water level, wood and chimney in that order.
